Second Grade Certification
All second graders are tested for the Talent Development program beginning in the fall of each school year. Student's test results are used to determine eligibility. Students must earn 12 points on the Talent Development Identification Rubric in order to certify Academically and Intellectually Gifted (AIG) in both reading and math or 6 points in either subject area in order to certify AIG in math only or reading only. There are a variety of opportunities for second grade students to potentially earn points on the identification rubric. A broad schedule for certification is below.
September 2016- All second graders take Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Parents will be notified of the testing date.
October 2016- CogAT results sent home. First round of students are identified AIG based on CogAT composite score.
October/November 2016- Based on CogAT results, eligible students will take Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS) with parent permission.
November/December 2016 -ITBS results sent home. Second round of students are identified AIG based on CogAT and ITBS.
January 2017- Portfolios for eligible students will be presented to the TD department.
February 2017 - Portfolio results sent home. Last round of students will certify AIG based on portfolio or subject-based identification in reading or math based on CogAT/ITBS.
